Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair restoration technique where a patient’s hair is transplanted in naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs, called follicular units.
Follicular units also contain oil glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional fine vellus hairs. In Follicular Unit
Transplantation these small units allow the surgeon to safely transplant thousands of grafts in a single session, which maximizes the cosmetic impact of the procedure.
FUT gives the highest yield of hair. When a patient’s primary goal is to achieve maximum fullness from the hair restoration, FUT should be considered.
There are many reasons for this, including the precision of stereo-microscopic dissection and the ability to efficiently harvest from a more select area of the door zone.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), also known as a follicular transfer (FT), is one of two primary methods of obtaining follicular units, naturally occurring groups of one to four hairs, for hair transplantation.
The other method is called strip harvesting. In FUE harvesting, individual follicular units are extracted directly from the hair restoration patient’s donor area, ideally one at a time.
This differs from strip-harvesting because, in strip harvesting, a strip of skin is removed from the patient and then dissected into many individual follicular units.
The follicular units obtained by either method are the basic building blocks of follicular unit transplantation (FUT).
The Advantages Of FUT
One of the main FUT benefits is that it gives a much higher yield of hair as compared to FUE.
FUT results in a single linear scar at the donor site. During subsequent FUT sessions, your hair transplant surgeon will incorporate your old scar in the new incision – as one edge of the new strip.
It is important to consider hair transplant costs when deciding on which hair transplant method is best for you; also take into consideration that you might need a follow-up session.
Although hair transplant costs vary greatly from state to state, the FUT costs will always be considerably cheaper than FUE.
FUE hair transplants result in little to no scarring, unlike FUT which produces a linear scar.
Hair transplant surgeons use a maximum harvest ratio of 1:5 – where 1 follicle unit out of every 5 is harvested for transplantation.
Once the patient’s hair grows out, the donor sites are no longer visible.
FUE allows the hair transplant surgeon to extract hair follicles from an individual’s back, chest, arms, legs, or face (beard) so that it can be transplanted to the scalp.
This body to head transplant (BHT) procedure is especially important for individuals with low hair density on their scalp as they do not have the required hair density for a regular hair transplant surgery.
Does not require any incision or sutures and so there is minimal downtime after this type of hair transplant procedure. A person who opts for an FUE procedure will be able to go back to their regular routine in 24-48 hours as compared to a FUT where recovery generally takes 7-10 days.
Both FUT and FUE have their pros and cons, one offers what the other lacks. So, you can either one depending on your cosmetic needs.
One of the considerations for any hair transplant procedures should be the level of scarring.
With this style of cosmetic surgery, it is inevitable that there will be some element of scarring to contend with.
