Before starting to make tattoos, the tattoo artist and the candidate first decide the subject to be drawn and the particular area where the tattoo will feature. Once they have finalized, the artist takes a needle, and draws an outline of the tattoo on the skin and gets confirmed from the client. After this, the process begins. At first, the artist use an electric tattoo machine and places different types of ink, and pigment into the dermis layer of skin; right under the epidermis (top-most layer of skin). It is done with the help of a single or group of needles, which are joined to a bar and connected to an oscillating unit. Needles are consistently driven in and out of the skin, usually 80 to 150 times, a second. Thick needles are injected for colored and shaded tattoos.
After first injection, the pigment gets distributed throughout a homogenized damaged layer, down the epidermis and upper dermis. Both these layers contain foreign particles, which triggers the phagocytes of the immune system to consume the pigment particles, as and when needles are inserted.
With healing, the injured epidermis gradually flakes away, and removes the surface pigment.Granulation tissue is formed in the deeper skin layers and through collagen growth, is converted to connective tissue. The upper dermis mends, and the pigment remains surrounded with fibroblasts. Finally, the pigment concentrates in a fine layer, just beneath the dermis or epidermis boundary. Initially, it’s stable; however, with time, it goes deeper into the dermis region, and forms the desired tattoo design.
