What are the types of hair loss patterns in males?
Men are equally prone to suffer hair loss. There are different types of hair loss patterns in men. According to Norwood’s classification of male pattern alopecia, there are seven hair loss patterns, found in men. Of these, four categories have Type “A” variant. Besides these, there are two other types of genetic hair loss.
Category IV- In this pattern, the vertex enhances and there’s significant hair loss in the front. Also, there’s a solid strap of hair across the mid-scalp that gradually breaks off towards the front and the vertex.
Category VI- It happens when the linking bridge gradually moves away and leaves a single sizeable bald spot on the front and top of head. Hair present on the scalp sides however remains in good quantities.
Norwood’s Type “A” variant applies to Categories II, III, IV and V and is known as Category IIa, IIIa, IVa and Va respectively. In this typical hair loss pattern, there’s increasing loss of hairs from front to back. The linking bridge of hair across the top of the head becomes less noticeable. More hair loss happens in the crown.
The two types of genetic hair losses- Diffuse Patterned Alopecia and Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia are rare cases among men.
Diffuse Patterned Alopecia (DPA) – This pattern is also known as androgenic alopecia. In DPA, hair thins down in scattered portions in the top, crown and front of head and develops a permanent thinning region. How common is hair loss pattern in males?
Research states that 40% of men around the world have significant loss of hairs by 35 years. Another 25% lose hairs within 65 years. A few 15% more have hair loss patterns by the age of 80. According to American Hair Loss Association, common male pattern baldness (MPB) accounts for 95% of hair loss cases in men.
Why men lose hairs?
Men are twice more likely to suffer hair loss, than women. The probable reasons are:
- Entrance of Testosterone in Hair Follicles- As testosterones enter the cells of hair follicles via gateways known as androgen receptors; it develops enzyme reactions. Such reactions form a by-product called Di-Hydro Testosterone (DHT), which is responsible for hair thinning.
- Presence of 5AR Enzyme in Hair Follicles- 5-alpha reductase enzyme, present in the hair follicles converts testosterones to DHT, which again causes potential shedding and thinning of hairs.
- DHT Interface with DNA- When DHT interacts with the DNA of hair follicles, it activates the hair loss genes and prevents further growth of hairs.

What is normal hair growth cycle?

- Catagen- In this stage, hair follicles shrink and detach from the dermal papilla. Catagen lasts about 10 days.
- Telogen- The third stage is the resting phase, which lasts about three months. Only 10%-15% of total hairs sustain in this stage of hair growth cycle. Old hairs rest and new hairs starts the growth phase.
- Exogen- When the resting hairs reach the terminal point in the follicle, it loosens, detaches and finally sheds off.
What is hair miniaturisation?
Hair miniaturisation is a condition in which the hair strands become shorter, thinner, and weaker, as it progresses into the different phases of hair growth cycle. It causes hair excessive thinning and takes away lustre from hair. In many cases, hair stops growing permanently after this condition.
